Exercise Boosts Sperm Count – Research Reveals

It is a known fact that a healthy lifestyle depends on regular exercise. This is not merely a healthcare industry truism, it has been supported by numerous scientific studies. Exercise helps you to strengthen your bones and muscles, shed excess weight and improves heart health. Moreover, exercise may also prevent psychological problems like depression and improve your mood.

Now, researchers at Urmia University in Iran have found out that regular exercise can also help improve sperm count.

The study

Published in the journal Reproduction, the study observed 261 healthy men. None of the participants had any reproductive issues and led a sedentary lifestyle with little or no exercise. The participants were divided into 4 groups. The different groups were assigned exercise of different intensities and durations. This would allow the researchers to find out if exercise had any positive impact on their sperm health and sperm concentration.

The findings

The researchers discovered that the group which was assigned moderate exercise had the sharpest increase in sperm quantity and quality. All of the groups reported gradual loss in weight and increased muscular strength. However, when it came to sperm count, the group who were required to execute moderate exercise came on the top.

What does this mean?

Male fertility depends on several factors, like sperm shape, volume, motility, viscosity, daily diet etc. So if you have problem conceiving, you need to take the advice of a specialist doctor who has wide experience in dealing with male infertility issues. However, if you are a healthy man, then you can increase your sperm count by getting regular exercise. Thus, while exercise is not the panacea, it can certainly boost your fertility.

Which exercise should you try?

The simplest kind of moderate-intensity exercise is cardiovascular exercise or “cardio”. These exercises increase heart rate, promote cardiovascular health, moderate body weight and improve endurance along with stamina. Just 45 minutes of jogging, running, swimming or push-ups every day is sufficient for you.  If you are not a fan of the outdoors, you can try using a stationary bicycle or a treadmill.

No need for hurry!

If you are not used to exercising regularly, you may find it awkward at first. Just choose a date within the next week as the starting date. On the day, try 10 minutes of brisk walking – that’s all! Do this for the next 3 days. Then you can increase the duration to 20 minutes. Keep increasing the time as it suits you. After three weeks, you can switch to jogging or pushups. Remember to drink plenty of water after each exercise session and don’t forget to wear loose shorts. This will help moderate the temperature around your testicles. There is no need to overstrain yourself. If you feel pain in any part of your body, stop the session immediately and take rest.
