Do You Know Depression Can Hurt Your Health Badly ? Find Out The Solution !!

Depression can lead to a number of physical symptoms. Hence, for those of you who thought that mental health and physical well-being have no connection with each other, it's time to rethink.

Individuals suffering from depression usually exhibit physical symptoms like sleep problems, headache, sexual disorders, aching muscles and joints, agitation and restlessness, back pain, fatigue and exhaustion, changes in appetite or weight, digestive problems and chest pain. The risk does not just stay limited to physical symptoms but can extend up to causing serious ailments which further trigger depression.

Fight Depression by following these simple steps:

1. Eat a nutritious diet - A healthy and balanced diet helps in maintaining a sharp mind and a fit body. This comprises the right amount of carbohydrates, proteins & fats along with the incorporation of vitamins, minerals and amino acids. Deficiency of amino acids can make an individual unfocussed and depressed. A protein rich diet will supply the body with this. Among the vitamins, the combination of B6, B9 & B12 plays a major role at lowering depression by promoting wellness, improving sleep and elevating mood. These vitamins can be found in foods such as leafy green vegetables, legumes, milk, eggs, fish, citrus fruits and nuts. While non-vegetarians get their adequate supply of vitamin B12 through the consumption of eggs, fish and meat, vegetarians can get it through milk, dairy products and fortified cereals.

2. Exercise on regular basis - Regular exercise is an easy way to bust stress. Studies have proven that exercise helps to lower the level of stress hormone i.e., cortisol. This happens because during exercise, the body releases endorphins that lift the mood and drive away depression. Exercising for 45 minutes, 5 days a week is ideal.

3. Maintain sleeping time - Minimum 7 hours of sleep is essential for an adult. People suffering from depression often find it difficult to fall asleep. Maintaining a fixed time to go to bed daily will help the body get adapted to feeling sleepy at that point of time. This will ensure that an individual will quickly fall asleep after going to bed at the allotted sleep time. Remember to avoid gadgets minimum 30 minutes before going to sleep. This is because the blue light emitted from the gadget’s display screen reduces melatonin which is the sleep hormone, thus hampering sleep.

4. Think positive - Negative thoughts tend to make people gloomy and sad. Therefore trying to keep negative thoughts at bay is the best way to keep depression away. Imagine your mind to be the master with two servants namely, Mr. Positive and Mr. Negative. While Mr. Positive needs to be made your permanent employee, Mr. Negative should be dismissed forever.

5. Follow routine - Depression makes an individual unorganized and lose track of time. Setting up a routine and following it on a regular basis gives life a purpose. Idleness leads to frustration which further gives birth to depression. Maintaining a routine will be like a guardian to keep a check on your activities. At times, you might feel like unfollowing the routine due to various reasons. In such a situation, do not listen to yourself. This routine should be followed even in worst situation. Trust me it will work for you.

6. Use supplements - Omega-3 fatty acids are highly concentrated in the brain and are important for memory, brain performance and behavioural function. It can be taken either in the form of Fish oil or Flaxseed oil. SAMe helps to increase Serotonin levels in the body. Serotonin, sometimes called the ‘Happy Hormone’ is a chemical that is responsible for maintaining mood balance. People who don't make enough SAMe naturally are recommended to take it as a supplement. Intake of probiotics significantly help to relieve the symptoms of depression related to mood and sleep quality. Combination of Vitamins B6, B9 and B12 also helps to combat depression. Consumption of Acetyl-levocarnitine, Lecithin in the form of supplements is also helpful in treating depression. Moreover, men can take Ashwagandha and women can take Shatavari as these are excellent anti-depressants. In this context, Vedcalm, a product of Naturoveda Organics is highly beneficial.

Vedcalm is a unique botanical formulation which protects you from the effects of stress, anxiety and depression in a natural way so as to provide complete solution. The synergistic combination of the potent herbs in Vedcalm such as Ashwagandha, Shankhpushpi, Mandukparni, Shatavari, Jatamansi, Malkangni and Adrak help to stabilize mood, tranquilize stress and promote relaxing sleep, while removing depression from the root.

7. Inculcate hobbies - Understanding yourself is the best way to keep your mind happy and relaxed. All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. So alongside work, every person should have a hobby to keep oneself attached during leisure time. If you do not have a hobby, find it out. Try different things and discover which one you enjoy the most.

Health Facts Which Every Woman Must Know

Mother, teacher, wife, colleague – these are just some of the roles that women play today. As the importance of women grows, their collective health becomes all-the-more vital. No country on earth can flourish if the women languish in ill-health. On the august occasion of International Women’s Day, let us look at some major health problems faced by women and try to find simple solutions.

Health issues that women face

1. Childhood
During childhood, major issues that affect girls are malnutrition or obesity. Undernourished girls have low immunity and often fall prey to a number of diseases while obese girls also suffer from a lot of health problems.

Foods to be taken to overcome malnutrition:
     ·         Protein-rich foods like fish, meat, eggs and lentils (dal)
     ·         Dairy products like milk, cheese, butter and yogurt
     ·         Foods like dried fruits, whole milk and nuts

Foods that help avoid obesity:
·                 Whole grain cereal which is high in fibre and low in sugar
     ·         Fresh fruits
     ·         Colourful fruits and vegetables

2. Teenage
This is the stage when a girl enters adolescence. It is during this time that she begins her menstrual cycle. This phase is marked by several signs like sudden weakness, loss of appetite and unpredictable mood. Proper diet and rest are necessary for her good health. Teenagers are fitness conscious. They want to stay slim and hence diet. Their idea of dieting equates with fasting. This often leads to anaemia, which can be further aggravated by loss of blood due to menstruation.

What teenage girls need during menstruation:
    ·         Foods rich in Omega-3 fatty acids like salmon, anchovies and walnuts
    ·         Calcium-rich and magnesium-rich foods like spinach and dates
    ·         Vitamin C containing foods like oranges and tomatoes
    ·         Whole grains like barley, brown rice and oatmeal
    ·         Fresh seasonal fruits

What to avoid during menstruation:
    ·         Caffeinated drinks
    ·         Fried food
    ·         Red meat
    ·         Sour and salty food like pickles

3. Middle Age
This is the stage when women undergo pre and post menopausal issues. Mood swings, hot flashes, skin dryness, headaches, joint and muscle aches, night sweats and irregular periods mark this stage.

Foods to take:
    ·         High-fibre food like whole wheat bread, cereals, pasta, fresh fruits and vegetables
    ·         Calcium-rich food like dairy products, fish and legumes
    ·         Iron-rich food like green leafy vegetables, meat, eggs, fish and nuts

4. Old Age
Old age is marked by reduced bone strength, the degeneration of which begins with menopause. Brittle bones often result in Osteoporosis in old women thereby increasing the chances of injury and fractures. Osteoarthritis is also a disease that affects women of this age. Memory loss is another prominent illness among ageing women. The situation demands for proper care and regulated eating habit.

Food for old age:
   ·         Fish rich in Omega- 3 like salmon and sardines
   ·         Walnuts
   ·         Dairy products
   ·         Lean meat

Women's health and society

Women play a major role in the household. Therefore, their good health will ensure better health for the entire family. On a larger scale, it will positively impact the society. Women are undertaking prominent roles and are contributing to the country more than ever before. Hence, they should also care for their own health.

Fact Or Fake? Tomato Ketchup Contains Blood, Urine & Cocaine

The news is viral all over the social media. And if you are trying to find the truth about it, you definitely got to read this.

Media Buzz
A video doing the rounds across the social media claims that an international firm manufactures tomato ketchup using blood, urine and cocaine. Though it is enough to make yourself a promise that you won't ever touch ketchup again, you need to think logically. What is tomato ketchup really made of?

The Argument
An assortment of tomato paste, sweetener, vinegar, seasonings and spices; tomato ketchup is a saviour in terms of adding flavour to the otherwise boring and bland food. If this condiment is at all to be put up for questioning, doesn't it sound rather weird as to how would a ketchup taste if it had urine! The addition of urine in ketchup would definitely affect its taste and flavour. Contrarily, ketchup tastes good and hence, it's taken with all kinds of food items. If at all extra seasoning is added to mask the smell, that would only increase the cost of production.

Incorporation of cocaine would only result in the input cost going higher than the output cost. Thereby, confirming that no company would like to take up a business strategy that involves incurring loss. While arguments have come to the fore, that sometimes tomato ketchup congeals and if or not that is a sign of the product containing blood. This speculation has been well combated with firm answers. Ketchup congeals while cooking, water evaporates from the mix leaving the starch and sugar in the sauce to dry out. This process is very different from coagulation of blood and hence the two can in no way be co-related.

When England's football manager allowed the return of ketchup in players’ diet ahead of the World Cup, it sure did raise a few eyebrows as to the health benefits associated with it.

Health Benefits of Tomato Ketchup

1. Reduces Blood Cholesterol: A study conducted at the University of Oulu in Finland found that everyday intake of tomato ketchup helps to reduce bad cholesterol in blood, known as Low-Density Lipoprotein (LDL). A report on the findings, published in the British Journal of Nutrition said, "The changes we saw can be regarded as significant, considering that the time period was only three weeks and all the volunteers had normal cholesterol levels to start with."

2. Decreases chances of Cancer: Lycopene is a powerful antioxidant that is present in tomatoes. It imparts red colour to the fruit. Lycopene helps to protect the body against many types of Cancer. According to a 2002 American study of 47,000 men, "Eating tomato sauce two or more times a week reduces a man’s risk of developing prostate cancer by around 20 per cent".

3. Improves Eyesight: Alongside being high in Vitamin C and low in fat, tomato ketchup contains Vitamin A. The key for a healthy immune system, Vitamin A ensures better vision.

Face the Fact
Honestly speaking, despite the above mentioned benefits, ketchup is loaded with sugar and salt. Thereby, it can be in no way best for health. Moreover, one needs to take tomatoes in a considerably good quantity to reap the above mentioned benefits. Yet, it all together does not say we should abstain from ketchup intake. So, whenever you have craving for ketchup go for it because a balance of everything is good for both your health and taste bud.

Sexual Inadequacies – How Do They Ruin Your Life?

Imagine losing something which is one of the greatest sources of pleasure and happiness. Imagine being in a situation where you are unable to keep your marital partner happy, leading to suspicion, worry, ill-will and brooding unhappiness. Sadly, many people don’t need to ‘imagine’ such things. They are suffering from Sexual Inadequacies.

What are sexual inadequacies?

These refer to a set of problems affecting the sexual organs of an individual that interfere with his ability to engage in sexual activities. Such problems affect sexual desire, physical pleasure, stamina, arousal and orgasm. This does not necessarily mean that sexual organs are malfunctioning. In many cases, such issues can be psychosomatic as well. Broadly speaking, Loss of Libido, Erectile Dysfunction and Premature Ejaculation are the most common sexual inadequacies.

Loss of Libido

When a person has reduced desire to engage in sexual congress, such a condition is called loss of libido. Persons who have this problem simply don’t have the desire to engage in sexual activities. This can create enormous distrust, frustration and embarrassment in both the partners. The primary cause of this sexual problem is hormonal imbalance, especially in the production of oestrogen or testosterone.

Erectile Dysfunction

If you have difficulty in getting or maintaining an erection, then you are suffering from Erectile Dysfunction. Damage to the nerves in the penis can reduce the sexual stimulus. In many cases, Diabetes or heart disease can also lead to erectile problems in men. These health problems interfere with the physical mechanisms associated with erection. However, Erectile Dysfunction has a strong psychological aspect to it. Men suffering from this problem are usually beset with worry, stress, embarrassment from past performance failures and feelings of low self-confidence.

Premature Ejaculation

This sexual problem occurs when the male partner is unable to restrain himself and ejaculates too soon, leading to feelings of dissatisfaction and embarrassment. Like Erectile Dysfunction, Premature Ejaculation is caused primarily due to psychological issues, although the latest research has unearthed physiological causes as well.

Who are at risk?

Sexual inadequacies like Loss of Libido, Erectile Dysfunction and Premature Ejaculation have a higher tendency to affect people with the following conditions:

1. Obesity: People with sexual inadequacies tend to have excess weight, which creates havoc with their self-image and reduces stamina.

2. Diabetes: People suffering from Diabetes have an increased risk of having sexual inadequacies and poor sexual health.

3. Smoking: The harmful chemical in cigarette smoke can gradually begin to interfere with sexual performance and trigger sexual problems.

4. Stress: Problems like Erectile Dysfunction and Loss of Libido can be initiated by chronic stress.

5. Medications: Certain drugs like anti-depressants are known to reduce libido and degrade sexual performance, if used for a long time.

What you should do

If you feel that your sexual life is in an unsatisfactory state, then you need to consult a specialised sexual health clinic and get expert advice from the experienced doctors. Try to be absolutely honest in answering the questions put before you. You will be asked about your diet, general lifestyle, sexual history, level of exercise and daily routine. This will help the doctors make the correct diagnosis and formulate a plan to eliminate your sexual inadequacies.

Eating Bananas And Eggs Together Can Kill You - Myth Or Truth?

You can find anything on the internet, especially a lie!

No matter what your question may be, the internet has the answer. But is the answer correct? Internet can also help to supply the facts needed to bolster your belief. So if you believe that there are pink elephants on Mars, the internet is ready to help you substantiate this claim!

Recently, a question is spreading like a wild fire through the social media: can eating bananas and eggs together kill you?

Anatomy of a question

People ask all sorts of stupid questions on the net. However, this banana-and-egg dilemma catches the eye in an instant. How can such simple and easily available foods be harmful if taken together? Aren’t naturally occurring foods supposed to be harmless? Is this a clash between “veg” and “non-veg” food? Or is it a disagreement between “sattvic” and “tamasic” food? In short, the question is so confidently stated that it might seem to be true.

What’s the big deal?

Both of these foods are easily available throughout the length and breadth of India. They form an integral part of the daily diet of millions of people in India and around the world.

Bananas are rich in potassium, carbohydrates, fibre while having little or no fat. They are an ideal snack no matter what your diet may be.

Eggs, on the other hand, are an excellent non-meat source of multiple vitamins like vitamin A, B, D, E and K. Vital minerals like selenium, calcium and zinc are also present in eggs.

Bananas and eggs – a killer combination?

The burning question of the hour is whether eating bananas and eggs together can result in death.

People who ask this question are not entirely sure what they are asking. Very few people can eat a banana and an egg “together”, unless they want to choke themselves. Moreover, very few people eat only bananas and eggs. Human diet is, after all, quite diverse. So, do the chemicals in the banana and egg form a lethal compound in the stomach?

Fortunately, the entire thing is nothing more than a rumour. There is almost no chance that the natural compounds present in bananas and eggs can somehow combine to create a life-threatening chemical in your belly.

Furthermore, many recipes actually suggest mixing bananas with eggs. Banana pancakes, fruit-egg muffins and banana bread are just some commonplace examples of bananas and eggs coexisting without killing people.

Wait a minute!

This does not mean that you can shove any banana and egg down your throat. Make sure that you examine both foods for signs of decomposition, disease or discolouration. If they smell, look or taste weird, then dump them in the nearest dustbin without delay.

Top Tips For Anger Management

A single moment of anger can destroy what took years to build: your marriage, your career or even your life.

When people think about “anger management”, they feel that it is an attempt to fix something that is “wrong” in them. This makes them wary of learning even the basic strategies of managing anger.

If this is what you think, then it is time to change your attitude.

Anger management tips are not necessarily there to “repair” you, they are guidelines for bringing anger under control before it erupts and destroys everything around it. This anger can originate within you, or it may be a reaction to the anger expressed by those around you. Given the fact that you encounter different people with different character traits every single day, learning and applying basic anger management rules is a vital life-skill which you should inculcate no matter what your age, gender, job-profile or ethnicity may be.

Anger management tips

1. Think before you speak: Words are like arrows, as the saying goes, once spoken they can never be taken back. And like arrows, words can hurt. Instead of saying something you would later regret, take a few moments and collect your thoughts. If you feel angry thoughts crowding your mind, then it is better to be silent, even if the other party is putting pressure on you for a response.

2. Channel your anger: Anger as a force cannot be contained. However, it can be released in a careful and intelligent way. Once you feel you have gained sufficient control over your tongue, tell the other person you are actually feeling angry. Try to do this without appearing to attack them or hurt their feelings.

3. Try some exercise: Physical activity is another way to channel the feeling of anger. Whenever you want to control your anger, go for a brisk walk around the neighbourhood for 10 minutes. This will dramatically reduce the urge to act on the feeling of anger.

4. Take a break: Trying to do anything while feeling angry is a sure way of getting a poor output. So, take a short 10-minute break when you feel angry. Go and sit in a quiet corner. Count your breaths as you inhale and exhale. Inform others that you don’t want to be disturbed during your timeout.

5. Look for solutions: If the anger is triggered by a problem (such as a poor project report or a bad customer review) then the most sensible thing to do is to seek possible solutions as soon as possible. For example, you could try contacting the customer and request more details about the negative review. You can then use this information to make sure that future customers don’t face the same difficulties when they come to you.

6. Don’t hold a grudge: It is possible that in spite of precautions, you still ended up having a quarrel with your colleague. The least you can do is to avoid nurturing a grudge against him in your heart. A grudge hurts no one but yourself. More importantly, a grudge can trigger the next quarrel.

7. Practise relaxation techniques: One of the most serious sources of anger is stress. If you feel stressed out at work or in your home, then you can try doing meditation or Yoga for 15 minutes every day. These techniques have a positive effect on your mind and reduce the urge to get angry.

8. Use humour: Sometimes, you may face a situation where others around you are angry. In such a case, try using humour to diffuse the tension and lighten up the mood. Crack a joke or relate a funny incident. Try to avoid sarcasm, as it may be wrongly interpreted as a veiled attack.

Happiness Is A Good Night’s Sleep!

In today’s fast-paced world, taking care of the bare necessities like getting adequate sleep has become a challenge for us. When the body is deprived of such a crucial health-promoting activity, it becomes a breeding ground of disease. Moreover, it begins to lose its grip on the mental equilibrium.

Now, the latest research done by Gallup and Healthways shows that getting a good night’s sleep is vital in being happy.

The study

Researchers surveyed about 7000 adults in trying to find out whether there is any connection between duration or quality of sleep and the level of self-reported happiness. The researchers recorded the daily sleep schedule of the participants over an extensive period. This data was then matched with how happy the participants described their life to be. This was done by asking the participants to give a number out of 100 about their overall quality of life and general wellbeing.

The findings

The survey found that the wellbeing score for people who slept for 8 hours at night was 65.7. For those who slept for 7 hours, the score was 64.2, while people who got only 6 hours of sleep were scored at 59.4. Thus, people who got 8 hours of sleep every night reported greater sense of wellbeing and happiness than those who slept less.

But why?

Over the past several decades, researchers and medical experts have been looking into the effect of sleep on emotional health. They discovered, that people with insomnia generally reported greater sense of worry and anxiety. Depression was also not uncommon among people who did not get adequate sleep. During the period of sleep, various biochemical processes take place in the brain. Sleep provides you with the opportunity to make necessary repairs, which in turn help to maintain a balanced emotional state. This makes sleep an essential part of having a healthy mood.

5 tips for better sleep

1. Be active during the day: It helps to establish your sleep cycle while allowing you to expend energy. Moreover, physical activity has been shown to reduce stress, which in turn helps in sleep. You can try out activities like swimming and light aerobics during the day. If you don’t have much time in the morning, you can walk or jog in the evening.

2. Steer clear of stimulants: When taken near bedtime, tea or coffee forces the body to stay awake even if you really want to sleep. It is better to drink herbal tea in the evening if you have any trouble sleeping. While drinking alcohol makes you sleepy, it will leave you wide awake halfway through the night, thus completely disrupting your sleep cycle.

3. Reduce stress: The accumulated stress from a hectic lifestyle can also prevent you from sleeping. Avoid stressful activities like watching the news before going to bed. Do something relaxing within the two hours before bedtime. Read a good book or listen to relaxing music. Work on a hobby which you find relaxing.

4. Don’t work in the bed: This helps to associate the bed with nothing but sleep. Avoid watching TV or browsing the web or reading office documents while in bed. Among psychiatrists it is common knowledge that doing no activity other than sleeping in the bed room trains your body to respect the bedtime.

5. Avoid staying in bed unnecessarily: Restrict the amount of time spent in bed. That way, you are more likely to feel sleepy when you are in bed. Don’t stay in bed if you do not want to sleep. Get up and do some activities like reading a book or listening to music.

Hypertension is known as a silent killer. More than the condition itself, it is the variety of health problems which arise because of Hypertension that makes it such a threat to your health and wellbeing. Many people with Hypertension go on for years without realising its presence. By then, the damage has been done – your body becomes the breeding ground for various problems like heart disease, kidney malfunction and even stroke.

In the battle against Hypertension, many people forget just how effective home remedies can be. These traditional remedies are made using ingredients which can be found in most Indian kitchens. These home remedies can help you combat the ill effects of Hypertension. Moreover, these remedies can work with the medicines you have been prescribed so as to give you an added layer of protection.

Home remedies for Hypertension

1. Garlic: This is one of the most common remedies which people with Hypertension rely upon. Garlic is rich in a highly reactive compound called allicin. Regular consumption of garlic helps to bring down high blood pressure and reduce the intensity of associated symptoms like dizziness and blurred vision.

· Take two cloves of garlic and beat them into a thick paste.
· Pour the paste into a cup of lukewarm milk and mix well.
· Drink this once in the morning and once at night.

2. Lemon: Having lemons in your daily diet helps to keep the blood vessels soft and pliable, which in turn reduce the damage caused by Hypertension on the circulatory system. The vitamin C present in lemon juice is a potent antioxidant which protects the body from oxidative stress caused by free radicals.

· Add 1 teaspoon of fresh lemon juice into 1 cup of warm water.
· Stir well and drink it on an empty stomach every morning after waking up.

3. Onion: This common kitchen ingredient has high concentration of a powerful antioxidant called quercetin, which works to gradually bring your blood pressure to the normal levels.

· Blend half an onion in a mixer-grinder until it becomes a thick paste.
· Add 2 teaspoons of honey and mix thoroughly.
· Take this twice a day for at least 1 week.

4. Beetroot: Regular consumption of beetroot helps to release stress from the blood vessels and aids in proper blood flow. This in turn keeps the blood pressure under control and reduces the symptoms of Hypertension while simultaneously promoting overall cardiovascular health.

· Take 1 small beetroot and half an apple and blend it in a mixer-grinder until it becomes a thick paste.
· Pour the paste in a glass of water.
· Add a little lemon juice for taste and mix well.
· Drink this once in the morning every day.

5. Vegetable juice: Vegetables like carrots, spinach and parsley can play a vital role in keeping your blood pressure under control. These vegetables can also help maintain your overall health.

· Put 1 carrot, a clump of spinach and some parsley in a mixer-grinder and blend it until it becomes a thick paste.
· Add the paste into a glass of water.
· Add a little honey for taste.
· Drink this once every day.
