Fight Arthritis Right At Home – With Natural Remedies!

There is a saying that wisdom comes with age. While it may not be always true, one thing is certain: we begin to appreciate joint health only when we age.

One of the most formidable threats to joint health as you age is Arthritis. This problem eats away the intricate structures in your joint, causing pain, stiffness, swelling and severely decreased joint mobility. If left untreated, Arthritis can leave you completely bedridden and can degrade your capacity to complete even simple everyday tasks.

While following the doctor’s advice and taking the prescribed medicines are vital in treating Arthritis, you can try out home remedies as an added measure of protection. These home remedies are made from naturally occurring ingredients which have been mentioned in renowned classical Ayurvedic texts. Moreover, these home remedies can be easily prepared with minimal fuss as most of the ingredients are commonplace in an Indian kitchen. With the dual support of medicines and natural home remedies, you can regain and maintain your joint health with ease!

Home remedies for Arthritis

1. Turmeric: This commonly available herb has powerful anti-inflammatory properties which makes it highly beneficial in joint problem like Osteoarthritis. Regular consumption of turmeric helps to moderate the functioning of the immune system, which in turn can bring some relief from the uncomfortable symptoms of Rheumatoid Arthritis. Research shows that the compound called curcumin found in turmeric is responsible for its medicinal efficacy.

· In a cup of boiling water, put 1 teaspoon of turmeric powder and stir well.
· Add finely chopped pieces of ginger and let it boil for 2 minutes.
· Strain and remove the residue.
· Drink once in the morning and before going to bed.

2. Eucalyptus: If you are looking for a safe way to control arthritic pain, then you should try out Eucalyptus oil. When applied to the skin, the oil produces a cooling sensation which temporarily brings down the experience of pain. You can apply this oil before going to bed to ensure that the pain does not interfere with your sleep.

· Mix 10 drops of Eucalyptus oil with 5 drops of peppermint oil in a cup.
· Add 2 tablespoons of olive oil and mix well.
· Store the mixture in a dark bottle.
· Apply it gently on the affected joint in the morning and before going to bed.

3. Cinnamon: This spice has been used for centuries to treat various problems like Arthritis for its antioxidant, anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory properties. Cinnamon slows down the activity of a particular type of bone cell called osteoblast, which is responsible for bone loss.

· Mix 1 teaspoon of cinnamon powder with 2 tablespoons of honey.
· Add it to a cup of warm water and mix well.
· Drink it in the morning on an empty stomach.

4. Green tea: Researchers have found that drinking 3 cups of green tea everyday helps to combat the symptoms of common arthritis problems like Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis. Moreover, regular consumption of green tea can also reduce the risk of developing Arthritis due to ageing.

Take 1 teaspoon of green tea in a teapot.
• Pour 1 cup of hot water into it.
Leave the mixture for about 2 minutes.
• Strain the mixture and remove the residue.
  Drink the fluid slowly.
• Do this thrice a day.

5. Clove: It contains a powerful anti-inflammatory agent called Eugenol which slows down inflammation in and around the affected joint. The antioxidants present in clove slow down the erosion of cartilage and bone matter due to Arthritis.

Take a spoonful of whole cloves and put them in a cup of boiling water.
Boil the mixture for 2 minutes.
 Strain and remove the residue.
Add a little honey for taste.
 Drink this twice a day.

Simple Yoga Tips For Arthritis

Controlled activity is one of the most important ways of dealing with Arthritis. Yes, the symptoms like chronic pain and stiffness can make it difficult to take part in regular physical activities. But if you want to recover from such stubborn joint problems, then you need to make use of your joints in a restrained and careful manner.

In such a scenario, the ancient discipline of Yoga can be enormously beneficial!

Yoga and Arthritis

While there is no outright cure for the problem of Arthritis, Yoga can help you regain and maintain joint mobility, flexibility and strength. Regular practice of Yoga can improve blood circulation in and around the joints and muscles, thus allowing the joint structures to get fresh oxygenated and nutrient-rich blood. Furthermore, Yoga can encourage bone growth and help maintain the structural integrity of the joints. Most importantly, Yoga has a deeply positive impact on your mood, enabling you to sustain your present predicament with fortitude and serenity.

What is Yoga?

This ancient Indian mind-body practice uses physical postures, controlled breathing and meditative gestures to enable you to relax and regain the strength that you have lost to disease and illness. Yoga consists of:

1. Asana: These are specialized postures which have been handed down from ancient lineages of Yoga teachers and students. These Asanas increase muscular strength, improve flexibility and boost blood circulation throughout the body.

2. Pranayama: Another important aspect of Yoga is the practice of controlled breathing. Through Pranayama, the entire body becomes rejuvenated with fresh supply of oxygen. Pranayama also helps to moderate your mood and psychological state.

3. Mudra: These are symbolic gestures usually made using the hands. They help you calm down and prepare your mind for a deep and immersive period of meditation.

Yoga for Arthritis

1. Ardha Salabhasana: Also known as the ‘Half Locust Pose’, this Asana provides you with a comprehensive workout for the bones and muscles in your arms, legs, back and abdomen. It stimulates the nervous system, enhances digestion and moderates the functioning of abdominal organs.

2. Surya Bhedana Pranayama: Regular practice of this breathing technique rejuvenates the entire body, thus allowing you to complete your daily activities in spite of having Arthritis. Simultaneously, it improves stamina, thus enabling you to lead a fulfilling life.

3. Pada Mudra: This particular Mudra improves muscular flexibility and strength in the legs, which is usually negatively affected by Arthritis. Regular practice of this Mudra will help you maintain joint function in the legs while reducing pain sensation caused by Arthritis.

You Can Combat Arthritis Naturally!!

People with Arthritis may feel that all is lost. As they hear of the terrible news from the doctor, they simply assume that their life is over. After all, it is a known fact that Arthritis is not curable. Thus, people with Arthritis end up believing that all that’s left is a life of pain, stiffness and decreased physical capacity.

However, this is not necessarily true.

While it is correct that there is no silver bullet for Arthritis, it can indeed be controlled and managed in such a way that you will be able to continue your daily duties without any significant hindrance. This requires making appropriate changes to the way you are living.

People with Arthritis need to watch their daily diet. Certain foods have been proven to combat and reduce the symptoms associated with Arthritis. On the other hand, some foods can make Arthritis worse. You need to include foods which help fight Arthritis and promote joint health if you want to retain joint function as long as possible.

Foods for Arthritis

1. Ginger: This popular herb has been used for centuries in Ayurveda for its ability to address chronic joint problems. Moreover, according to contemporary research, ginger has potent anti-oxidants which help the body regulate inflammation, thus reducing the damage caused by the autoimmune reaction to joint tissue. This makes ginger effective against Osteoarthritis as well as Rheumatoid Arthritis.

2. Anchovies: These fish are packed with omega-3 fatty acids which are essential in maintaining joint health. These fatty acids also help to regulate the level of inflammation, thereby reducing the intensity of autoimmune response of the body. You should eat anchovies regularly, if you want to get a grip on the uncomfortable symptoms of Arthritis.

3. Dairy products: These products are widely available and quite affordable. Items like milk, cheese and yogurt are rich in important nutrients like calcium and vitamin D. Since your body cannot manufacture these two elements, it is totally dependent on the kind of food you eat. Calcium is necessary in making and maintaining the skeletal structure, while vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium in an efficient manner. People with Arthritis should try to consume adequate amount of dairy products every single day.

4. Oranges: Citrus fruits like oranges have high concentration of vitamin C, which is used by the body to make collagen, that helps to support joint tissue. Try to eat at least one orange every day to help improve joint health.

5. Olive oil: Famous for its use in the Mediterranean, olive oil has spread to all parts of the world. It is renowned for its health-boosting capacity. The oleic acid present in it is especially useful to people with Arthritis as it is known to bring down inflammation in the body. You can use this oil in your salad or daily cooking. Olive oil can help your joints stay healthy and help maintain general well-being.

How herbs can improve joint health

While the foods listed above will help you keep your joints healthy, they are incapable of addressing the root cause of the problem of Arthritis. Sadly, the medicines usually prescribed for Arthritis try to just reduce the unpleasant symptoms while leaving the core issues unaddressed.

In such a situation, you can benefit enormously from the healing touch of naturally occurring herbs. The ancient medical discipline of Ayurveda has used ingredients like Guggul Suddha, Kulanjan, Gokharu and Nirgundi for centuries to strengthen the joints of people affected by Arthritis. Moreover, modern scientific research is confirming the potent health-boosting capacities of these herbs.

The combined efficacy of all these herbs is now available in one power-packed product: Naturovat.

The Threat Of Arthritis To Your Joint Health

Let’s face the facts: people are usually not worried about their joints. But they should be.

The term ‘Arthritis’ refers to a group of joint disorders which silently eats away at joint integrity, shape and function. You come to realize its presence only in the later stages, when you can no longer use the affected joint normally. Arthritis can be extremely painful and debilitating. It has the power to make you suffer from chronic pain and stop you from completing even simple daily tasks.

Types of Arthritis

There are various types of Arthritis. Some of them are as follows:

• Osteoarthritis
• Rheumatoid Arthritis
• Gout
• Ankylosing Spondylitis
• Septic Arthritis
• Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis

Out of the multiple known types of Arthritis, Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis are the most common. While they are classified under the label ‘Arthritis’, they are two different types of diseases. Osteoarthritis refers to the gradual degeneration of joint structure, whereas Rheumatoid Arthritis occurs due to a faulty autoimmune reaction in which the body’s immune system starts to attack its own healthy joint tissue.

Identifying Arthritis

If you have two or more of the following symptoms, there is a high probability that you are suffering from Arthritis:

• Lack of strength in a particular joint or limb
• High degree of stiffness (especially in the morning)
• Chronic joint pain
• Feeling weak and tired constantly
• Redness and warmth around a joint
• Reduced range of motion

What causes Arthritis?

The problem of Arthritis primarily affects the intricate structures in and around your joints. One important joint tissue is called cartilage. It is a firm and flexible connective tissue which protects the joint from sudden pressure or movement by acting as a shock-absorber.

Some degree of degeneration of joint tissue is inevitable with age. However, when the gradual wear-and-tear begins to cause discomfort and loss of joint function, then it must be treated as a problem.

Who are at risk?

• Age: On an average, the elderly are most at risk from various types of Arthritis, especially Osteoarthritis.

• Obesity: Carrying extra weight puts enormous stress on the joints, leading to greater degeneration of supportive tissue.

• Injury: People who take part in physically intensive activities like football or tennis may suffer from injuries that degrade joint health.

• Genetic abnormalities: If you have people with Arthritis in your immediate family, then there is a high risk that you too will suffer from this problem.

• Diabetes: Research has found that people with Diabetes are at higher risk of suffering from Arthritis than people with normal metabolism.

• Degree of usage: If your occupation requires you to execute repetitive motions involving one particular joint, then that joint may suffer from Arthritis in the near future.

What you should do if you have Arthritis

If you think you have some kind of Arthritis then firstly, you need to calm down. Yes, Arthritis is a major joint issue but worrying about it will not solve the problem. You need to reduce the use of the affected joint for at least a few weeks. Furthermore, you should visit a specialized clinic with wide experience in treating joint problems. The doctors may ask you to undergo blood tests and X-ray scans. You should give the doctor all necessary details regarding your daily activities, general lifestyle and diet. Instead of disregarding or hiding the problem, you need to tackle it head-on and follow the advice of a medical expert.

Heart-Friendly Drinks To Enjoy This Winter

                                                                                                                                                                      Winter is here!

The season of merriment, vacations and picnics has finally arrived. It is surely the season most of us look forward to. After all, we all want to experience the long-awaited joy of feeling warm in woolen clothes and hot drinks. It is winter which teaches us that the simple things in life provide the greatest joy.

However, you need to stay fit and healthy if you want to enjoy the weather. As winter makes its presence felt, so does disease and sickness. No matter if you are young or old, winter does pose a problem for the health-conscious.

Winter and heart health

Along with changes in the weather come changes to your body. Due to decreasing temperature and humidity, your heart has to work harder to send warm oxygenated blood to the rest of the body. This means an increase in heart rate and blood pressure. The cold weather also causes changes in the composition of your blood, which in turn increases the risk of blood clots and even stroke.

Today, let’s talk about some simple hot drinks that you can enjoy in winter to maintain heart health and keep health problems at bay.

5 heart-healthy drinks for winter

1. Green tea: This ancient hot drink has enormous health-boosting capacity. From weight loss to increased stamina – the application of green tea seems unlimited. Moreover, regular consumption of green tea has been shown to improve heart health. This special type of tea reduces the risk of blood clot formation. Just 3 cups of green tea each day will help you stay free for various cardiovascular problems while moderating the cholesterol level in your body.

2. Ginger tea: Known for its hot and sweet flavour, ginger tea is easy to prepare and a pleasure to consume. The active nutrients present in ginger have a variety of health benefits. Ginger can strengthen your cardiovascular system, reduce the risk of common cold and improve the functioning of your immune system. This can help your heart stay fit while allowing you to enjoy comprehensive health.

3. Cinnamon tea: Better known by its Hindi name dalchini, this humble kitchen ingredient has potent heart-protective capacity. Cinnamon helps the body to break down cholesterol, which in turn reduces the risk of arterial blockage and Atherosclerosis. It also helps the body keep control over the blood sugar level. Most importantly, cinnamon will guard you against common cold, which is known to spread during winter.

4. Hot Coffee: What would winter be without curling up in bed with a hot cup of coffee? If you enjoy drinking coffee, you will be pleased to know that when consumed in moderation, coffee is actually good for your heart. The caffeine temporarily increases the heart rate, improves stamina, removes lethargy and reduces the risk of suffering from stroke. Most importantly, controlled consumption of coffee makes it less likely for you to contract various heart-related diseases.

5. Black tea: The polyphenols and antioxidants present in tea help to maintain overall health and infuses a sense of vitality on a sluggish winter morning. Studies have found that tea may even reduce the risk of Atherosclerosis, especially among women. If you are wary of caffeine, you can definitely opt for black tea instead.

Exercise Boosts Sperm Count – Research Reveals

It is a known fact that a healthy lifestyle depends on regular exercise. This is not merely a healthcare industry truism, it has been supported by numerous scientific studies. Exercise helps you to strengthen your bones and muscles, shed excess weight and improves heart health. Moreover, exercise may also prevent psychological problems like depression and improve your mood.

Now, researchers at Urmia University in Iran have found out that regular exercise can also help improve sperm count.

The study

Published in the journal Reproduction, the study observed 261 healthy men. None of the participants had any reproductive issues and led a sedentary lifestyle with little or no exercise. The participants were divided into 4 groups. The different groups were assigned exercise of different intensities and durations. This would allow the researchers to find out if exercise had any positive impact on their sperm health and sperm concentration.

The findings

The researchers discovered that the group which was assigned moderate exercise had the sharpest increase in sperm quantity and quality. All of the groups reported gradual loss in weight and increased muscular strength. However, when it came to sperm count, the group who were required to execute moderate exercise came on the top.

What does this mean?

Male fertility depends on several factors, like sperm shape, volume, motility, viscosity, daily diet etc. So if you have problem conceiving, you need to take the advice of a specialist doctor who has wide experience in dealing with male infertility issues. However, if you are a healthy man, then you can increase your sperm count by getting regular exercise. Thus, while exercise is not the panacea, it can certainly boost your fertility.

Which exercise should you try?

The simplest kind of moderate-intensity exercise is cardiovascular exercise or “cardio”. These exercises increase heart rate, promote cardiovascular health, moderate body weight and improve endurance along with stamina. Just 45 minutes of jogging, running, swimming or push-ups every day is sufficient for you.  If you are not a fan of the outdoors, you can try using a stationary bicycle or a treadmill.

No need for hurry!

If you are not used to exercising regularly, you may find it awkward at first. Just choose a date within the next week as the starting date. On the day, try 10 minutes of brisk walking – that’s all! Do this for the next 3 days. Then you can increase the duration to 20 minutes. Keep increasing the time as it suits you. After three weeks, you can switch to jogging or pushups. Remember to drink plenty of water after each exercise session and don’t forget to wear loose shorts. This will help moderate the temperature around your testicles. There is no need to overstrain yourself. If you feel pain in any part of your body, stop the session immediately and take rest.

The resulting inflammation is responsible for most of the visible symptoms like itchiness, red patches and appearance of white scales made up of dead skin cells.

If you have Psoriasis, then you need to watch what you eat. Certain foods are known to intensify inflammation. This can worsen the symptoms of Psoriasis. On the other hand, some foods can actually help you get a grip on the dreaded condition. They can provide some relief from the symptoms and speed up the recovery period.

Foods for Psoriasis

1. Flaxseeds: They are rich in omega-3 fatty acids which are known to help in reducing the level of inflammation. These fatty acids also moderate the response of the immune system, thus minimizing the autoimmune reaction against the skin cells.

2. Carrots: Regular consumption of adequate carrots may lead to better control over some of the symptoms associated with Psoriasis. Carrots are rich in vitamins and minerals which work together to bring down the inflammatory reaction.

3. Walnuts: If you are suffering from Psoriasis, you need the power of “good fats” which are found in nuts like walnuts. Such nuts have high concentration of polyunsaturated fats which help to maintain overall health while reducing the concentration of harmful fats in the body.

4. Cabbage: It contains vitamin K which is needed to help in the healing process after the resolution of skin conditions like Psoriasis. They also help the body to heal the skin areas which have been affected by Psoriasis.

5. Oranges: This will help replenish the vitamin C which is found in high concentration on the outer layers of the skin (called the Epidermis). Vitamin C also helps speed up the healing process and undoes some of the damage caused by Psoriasis to skin health and texture.
