Protect Your Skin Health With 5 Simple Tips

When people think about their skin, they end up placing too much emphasis on the aesthetic aspect. Such people endlessly obsess over trivial things like skin tone, colour and texture. What they miss out is the fact that skin health is more than skin deep.

Skin, the largest organ in the human body, serves multiple functions. It acts as a barrier to keep out microbes and foreign bodies, helps retain or release moisture and is the primary producer of vitamin D. If you do not take proper care of your skin, then it will be unable to perform its various functions efficiently.

Protecting your skin health

1. Control sun exposure: This is perhaps the most important step you can take to secure your skin health. Sunlight contains harmful UV radiation which can damage skin cells and induce the formation of wrinkles, freckles, discolouration and even skin cancer. So remember to carry an umbrella whenever you need to step out into the sunlight. For extra protection, apply a sunscreen lotion (having at least SPF 30) on the most exposed portions of your skin.

2. Drink plenty of water: This will help to keep your skin moist and supple, while allowing the body to maintain a normal core temperature. Make sure you drink at least 8 glasses of water every single day. This will cut down the risk of suffering from dry and flaky skin.

3. Take health precautions: There are some minor but persistent bad habits such as sharing lipsticks or other cosmetic items with other people (mostly family members). This can lead to the spread of a wide range of skin infections. Don’t allow others to use beauty products that you use. Moreover, avoid touching your face with objects like telephone receivers which may have been used by other people.

4. Use cosmetic items carefully: If you want to use makeup then opt for products from reputed brands which are gentle to your skin. Try to use cosmetics sparingly. Putting on too much makeup can irritate the skin, leading to redness and itching. Wash your face properly with plain water before applying them. Avoid wearing makeup for too long. After removing them, wash your face with warm water and a mild cleanser.

5. Watch your skin: Pay attention to freckles and moles on your skin. If you observe any changes, then consult a skin expert without delay. If you regularly suffer from rashes, itching or dry skin, then you need to talk to your doctor before the condition worsens. This will help you diagnose and treat skin diseases like dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis or others in the early stages, which in turn will help speed up recovery time.
