Psoriasis - The Basic Facts

The agony of Psoriasis has as much to do with the feeling of embarrassment as it does with the disfigured skin. People who suffer from this dreadful skin problem are rudely ignored and are treated as outcasts by others in their social circle. The stress resulting from such isolation and apathy further worsens the disease. Thus, people with Psoriasis become trapped in a vicious cycle of stress and ill- health.

What is Psoriasis?

It is a chronic skin condition which causes excess production of skin cells. The build-up of cells produces the scaling which is common among people with Psoriasis. These scales are typically white or silvery in colour and cluster around in red patches. These patches may even form cracks and secrete blood.

Psoriatic patches usually develop on joints such as elbows and knees. They may also develop on other parts of the body, such as the hands, feet and scalp.

Identifying Psoriasis

The most common symptoms are:

• Red, inflamed patches of skin
• White scales
• Severe dryness of skin
• Chronic itchiness and burning sensation around the patches
• Pain and swelling in the joints

What causes Psoriasis?

It is an autoimmune condition, which occurs when the immune system starts to attack healthy skin cells of the body, mistakenly thinking that it is fighting an infection. This causes the skin cells to reproduce at a faster rate, leading to pile up of excess skin cells on the surface. This build-up of skin cells leads to the formation of white scales. The autoimmune reaction causes the patches to become red and inflamed.

Types of Psoriasis

There are mainly 5 types of Psoriasis:

1. Plaque Psoriasis: About 80% of people who have this condition have Plaque Psoriasis. It causes the most familiar symptoms associated with Psoriasis, such as red inflamed patches and scales.

2. Guttate Psoriasis: This type is common among children. It causes the formation of small pink spots, which are mostly found in the legs, torso or abdomen.

3. Pustular Psoriasis: This condition is more common among adults. It causes blisters filled with pus. The skin develops broad red patches. These patches are usually found on the hands or feet.

4. Inverse Psoriasis: It causes bright red patches on the skin. Patches of this type of Psoriasis usually affect the groin or the breasts.

5. Erythrodermic Psoriasis: This is the rarest type of Psoriasis. The skin on large portions of the body begins to appear sunburned accompanied by sheets of scales. The person may also suffer from moderate fever.

Is Psoriasis contagious?

Psoriasis is not contagious. This skin problem does not spread from one person to another. Touching a psoriatic patch of another person will not cause you to develop the condition.

What to do if you have Psoriasis

The obvious thing to do is to visit a specialized clinic which deals in various skin conditions. At first, the doctor will undertake a physical examination of the patches in order to make sure that you are indeed suffering from Psoriasis. If the symptoms are unclear, you may be asked to undergo a biopsy, for which a small sample of your skin will be tested in the laboratory.

In the mean time, you need to act carefully to subdue the symptoms. Wash the affected areas gently with water and then apply a good moisturizer. Avoid cold air and make sure your skin remains well-hydrated at all times. Drink plenty of water and refrain from scratching the patches, as this will only increase the irritation. If you feel that the itchiness is becoming unbearable, then take a bath with warm water. Remember to apply a moisturizer after the bath. Most importantly, try to control the level of stress by doing Yoga, breathing exercises or simple meditation techniques.

Caring For Your Skin In Winter

Winter is finally here! The chill in the air proclaims the arrival of the season of joy, picnics, weddings and holidays. But along with the falling mercury come the familiar problems: dry skin, itchiness, cracking and flaking. Some people become especially vulnerable to skin problems like Eczema, Psoriasis etc.

Nonetheless, winter can be made enjoyable for you and your skin. All that you need to do is to take proper care of it in order to protect it from the damage caused by the season and to maintain its natural freshness, texture and suppleness.

Skin care in winter

1. Use a moisturizer: The air during winter season has low humidity. Any exposure to the air dries up your skin. This makes using a moisturizer all-the-more vital. Try to use oil-based lotions as they have better resilience. Make sure that the oil base is naturally produced, such as oil from avocado, primrose or almonds. These oils allow the skin pores to remain unclogged, thus reducing the risk of getting acne or pimples.

2. Apply a sunscreen: Sunscreen is necessary even in winter. Dry skin is especially vulnerable to the ultraviolet radiation present in sunlight. This means that too much sunlight can damage your already weakened skin. So, make sure you apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen at least 30 minutes before going out into the sunlight. If you want added protection, then use an umbrella.

3. Protect your hands: The skin on your hands is usually thinner when compared to other parts of your body. Moreover, your hands are exposed to the cold and dry weather. This can eventually lead to itchiness and cracking. So, you should wear gloves unless you have to take them off. Before going to sleep at night, apply moisturizer on your hands. Make sure that the gloves don’t irritate your skin.

4. Avoid wet garments: They can irritate your skin and cause itchiness and sores. In certain cases, prolonged exposure to wet clothing can cause a flare-up of Eczema.

5. Get a humidifier: If you think that your skin is especially prone to dryness, then you can install a humidifier in your room. It can help increase the level of humidity in the air which in turn will reduce the feeling of dryness.

6. Drink adequate water: This will keep your skin hydrated and supple. Water also moderates the various important bodily processes like blood circulation and metabolism, which in turn helps the skin to get regular supply of nutrients.

7. Avoid using facial masks: If you feel that your skin is uncomfortable in winter, then there is no need to apply masks and peels, especially those with alcohol-based toners. This will only increase the sensation of dryness and can even lead to itchiness. Use cleansing milk or a mild foam-based cleanser without alcohol no more than thrice a week. This will give your skin plenty of time to recover its natural oiliness.

8. Use lukewarm water while bathing: This will help open up skin pores and enable a thorough clean up. Avoid extreme temperatures as they can severely damage the skin and cause redness and discolouration.

9. Exfoliate regularly: Find an appropriate exfoliating mask and use it at least once a week. This will get rid of the dead skin and encourage the growth of new skin cells.

10. Take care of your feet: This is probably the most ignored part of your body. Before going to bed, wash your feet with lukewarm water and then apply an oil-based moisturizer. This will keep your feet soft while reducing the risk of developing calluses.

You Can Lose Weight At Home – Find Out Now!

It is a sad fact that people generally aspire to lose weight for the superficial and cosmetic advantages of “looking good”. While any effort to lose excess fat is praiseworthy, such people often forget that carrying excess weight is actually an open invitation to various health problems. Heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and even stroke – these are some of the major implications of being obese. Thus, if you are obese, then you need to lose weight now!

“But how?” you declare. You are not at all interested in joining a gym, you are tired of various dieting ‘fads’ and dumbbells bore you to death. Is it possible to lose weight at home?

The answer will surprise you!

There are ingredients in your kitchen right now which – if properly used – can help you gradually lose weight. These ingredients are completely natural, having no known side effects. You can make the necessary concoctions right at home. Packed with potent fat-reducing properties, these home remedies will become your faithful companions in your journey away from Obesity and towards complete fitness!

Home remedies for Obesity

1. Lemon juice: It is the age-old remedy to combat the buildup of excess fat. The citric acid present in lemon juice helps to improve digestion while speeding up the metabolism of fat cells. It is a rich source of vitamin C, which is required for burning fat deposits. Lemon juice also removes toxins and bodily waste matter which may slow down metabolism.

• Mix three teaspoons of lemon juice, one teaspoon of honey, and one-half teaspoon of black pepper powder in one glass of water.
• Drink it after waking up in the morning on an empty stomach.
• Do this daily for at least three months.

2. Green tea: One of the primary reasons for the rising consumption of green tea around the world is its ability to promote weight loss. Researchers have found that green tea contains Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) which helps to slow down weight gain by restricting fat absorption. It also improves the body’s ability to burn fat cells.

• Take 1 teaspoon of green tea in a teapot.
• Pour 1 cup of hot water into it.
• Leave the mixture for about 2 minutes.
• Strain the mixture and remove the residue.
• Drink the fluid slowly.
• Do this thrice a day.

3. Curry leaves: This is a widely available aromatic herb which is frequently used in Indian cuisine. Regular consumption of these leaves stimulates digestive enzymes and helps to break down food particles. This enhances the metabolic rate of your digestive system.

• Cut 10 – 12 curry leaves into small pieces.
• Sprinkle them into a cup of buttermilk.
• Stir well.
• Drink it early in the morning and remember to chew the leaves thoroughly.

4. Mint leaves: Classical Ayurvedic texts mention mint leaves as an effective way to combat Obesity. The fragrance of mint leaves helps to control appetite and moderate the sensation of hunger. It reinvigorates the mind and promotes alertness, further reducing the incidence of mindless snacking.

• Take a bunch of fresh mint leaves.
• Add a pinch of salt and put it in a mixer-grinder. Grind it until it becomes a thick paste.
• Add the paste to a glass of water.
• Mix it well.
• Drink it after every meal.

5. Cinnamon: It increases metabolism of glucose, which moderates the sugar level in the blood. This in turn prevents the body from storing excess fat.

• Take quarter teaspoon of cinnamon powder and mix it with 1 teaspoon of honey.
• Add the mixture to 1 cup of hot water.
• Mix it well.
• Let it cool down a bit.
• Drink it slowly.
• Do this twice a day.

Fight Obesity And Stay Fit – With Yoga!

Among all the lifestyle diseases that plague modern society, Obesity is surely the most dangerous. The presence of excess fat in the body not only degrades your self-image but also offers an open invitation to all kinds of serious problems ranging from Hypertension to Stroke.

In such a troubling situation, can Yoga help you keep Obesity at bay and stay fit?

How Yoga combats Obesity

The ancient discipline of Yoga is now popular than ever before. The regular practice of Yoga has been proven to help you stay physically strong and mentally balanced, thus allowing you to lead a contented and fulfilling life. Yogasanas when combined with the healing power of Pranayamas and Mudras can guide you out of the problem of Obesity and lead to a healthy life without the need for expensive equipment.

In short: Yoga is the affordable and effective answer to Obesity!

Parts of Yoga

The ideal Yoga session should consist of three sections:

1. Yogasana: These are postures which have been handed down from generations of Yoga practitioners, students and Gurus. Asanas increase muscular strength and flexibility while improving blood circulation. Your muscles are compelled to burn calories and fat while receiving fresh supply of oxygen and nutrients through the blood.

2. Pranayama: The practice of these breathing exercises force your lungs to take up more air than it usually does, thus increasing oxygen supply throughout the body. This leads to efficient metabolism of fat while helping you to calm down and relax.

3. Mudra: It is a symbolic gesture made by using the hands. According to eminent Yogic texts like the Gheranda Samhita, such ritualistic finger positions help you focus and calm down. It creates the right mental ambience to undertake deep and uninterrupted meditation.

Yoga for Obesity

1. Dhanurasana: This Asana focuses the body’s weight on the abdominal muscles, thereby improving digestive function. This pose is especially beneficial for maintaining the health of abdominal organs like the liver, stomach and pancreas, which in turn helps in efficient processing of fat cells. It tones the muscles in the hands and legs, improves respiration and helps to burn fat. It is also known to moderate the secretion of adrenal glands while stimulating the nervous system.

2. Surya Bhedana Pranayama: This particular breathing exercise improves digestive efficiency, leading to faster metabolism of fat content. It is also known to moderate appetite, thus reducing the urge to eat more than necessary.

3. Yoga Mudra: These hand gestures help to evoke an atmosphere of serenity and calm, which allows you to meditate and leave your worries behind. While Obesity is indeed a problem, obsessing over it will not help you in any way!

The Danger of Obesity

Your body works on a simple equation: if the amount of energy absorbed through edible items exceeds the amount of energy spent, then the body stores the excess portion in the form of fat. This stored energy can be brought to use at any time. So, you can say that fat is not really your enemy.

This mechanism must have been really useful in the early human history, when food was scarce. If you don’t know when your next meal is, then having stored fat becomes crucial to survival. But in the modern era, food is plentiful and easy to procure. Hard physical labour is no longer mandatory. This means that the body is impelled to store more and more energy in the form of fat, leading to obesity. Fat, our old friend, has become our foe!

Important facts about Obesity

• The occurrence of obesity has doubled since 1980.
• About 2 billion adults are overweight. Among them, over 600 million suffer from obesity.
• 39% of adults are overweight in 2014, and 13% of them are obese.
• 41 million children under the age of 5 are known to be overweight or borderline obese.
• Obese people are at high risk of suffering from Diabetes, Hypertension, Heart disease, Osteoarthritis and even Depression.

Difference between being overweight and obese

If you weigh more than what is considered normal for your height, age and gender, then you are overweight. However, if your Body Mass Index (BMI) is 30 or above, then you are obese. While excess weight is merely a condition, Obesity is classified by doctors as a disease. Being overweight greatly increases the risk of becoming obese.

Common symptoms of Obesity

• Your clothes feel tight and no longer fit well.
• Even minor physical activity irritates you.
• You become easily tired.
• The waistline is gradually expanding.
• Body Mass Index is 30 or above.

What causes Obesity?

1. Genetics: Some people are genetically predisposed to gaining weight. This makes them more vulnerable to obesity.

2. Inadequate physical activity: If you don’t take part in energy-intensive activities like walking, jogging or swimming, then your body has no other option other than to store the excess calories in the form of fat.

3. Junk food: Regular consumption of such food tends to heighten the risk of becoming obese.

4. Binge eating: Having a habit of eating large quantities of food during and in between meals forces the body to increase fat production.

5. Insulin resistance: This hormone tells the fat cells to store or dump fat content. If the cells develop a resistance to insulin, then the fat cells may end up storing larger and larger amounts of fat.

6. Excess sugar intake: If your daily diet has high concentration of sugar, then it gradually changes the biochemical composition of your body. This may speed up the storage of fat.

How to fight Obesity

1. Get regular exercise: Simple aerobic exercises for 30 minutes daily can slowly but surely reduce your weight and normalize your BMI. You will end up with stronger bones and muscles along with a better overall physique.

2. Drink enough water: This will boost your metabolism while reducing the urge to eat more. Just 1 glass of water taken 30 minutes before a meal reduces calorie intake and helps in weight loss.

3. Take green tea: Just 3 cups of green tea per day are known to boost metabolism while gradually reducing weight. Green tea is rich in powerful anti-oxidants like catechins which help in burning fat.

4. Reduce sugar consumption: If you want to lose weight, you have to reduce your sugar intake. You can try out many kinds of sugar substitutes (like honey) to slowly replace sugar from your diet.

5. Limit carbohydrate intake: Eating less carbohydrate-rich foods can help you lose weight faster. It will also help improve your health by reducing your dependence on carbohydrates.

6. Eat green vegetables: One of the easiest ways to improve your general health is to eat fresh, minimally processed green leafy vegetables like cabbage and spinach. They will supply your body with most of the essential nutrients and reduce the urge to eat junk food.

Protect Your Skin Health With 5 Simple Tips

When people think about their skin, they end up placing too much emphasis on the aesthetic aspect. Such people endlessly obsess over trivial things like skin tone, colour and texture. What they miss out is the fact that skin health is more than skin deep.

Skin, the largest organ in the human body, serves multiple functions. It acts as a barrier to keep out microbes and foreign bodies, helps retain or release moisture and is the primary producer of vitamin D. If you do not take proper care of your skin, then it will be unable to perform its various functions efficiently.

Protecting your skin health

1. Control sun exposure: This is perhaps the most important step you can take to secure your skin health. Sunlight contains harmful UV radiation which can damage skin cells and induce the formation of wrinkles, freckles, discolouration and even skin cancer. So remember to carry an umbrella whenever you need to step out into the sunlight. For extra protection, apply a sunscreen lotion (having at least SPF 30) on the most exposed portions of your skin.

2. Drink plenty of water: This will help to keep your skin moist and supple, while allowing the body to maintain a normal core temperature. Make sure you drink at least 8 glasses of water every single day. This will cut down the risk of suffering from dry and flaky skin.

3. Take health precautions: There are some minor but persistent bad habits such as sharing lipsticks or other cosmetic items with other people (mostly family members). This can lead to the spread of a wide range of skin infections. Don’t allow others to use beauty products that you use. Moreover, avoid touching your face with objects like telephone receivers which may have been used by other people.

4. Use cosmetic items carefully: If you want to use makeup then opt for products from reputed brands which are gentle to your skin. Try to use cosmetics sparingly. Putting on too much makeup can irritate the skin, leading to redness and itching. Wash your face properly with plain water before applying them. Avoid wearing makeup for too long. After removing them, wash your face with warm water and a mild cleanser.

5. Watch your skin: Pay attention to freckles and moles on your skin. If you observe any changes, then consult a skin expert without delay. If you regularly suffer from rashes, itching or dry skin, then you need to talk to your doctor before the condition worsens. This will help you diagnose and treat skin diseases like dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis or others in the early stages, which in turn will help speed up recovery time.
